Card For Christmas

Sketch Book Cover Designs

Cover design for sketch book. I based the design on an original drawing of a garden space that I had drawn in pencil and then coloured using computer software. This was further developed by using the Art History brushes in Adobe Photoshop to create an abstract design. I began the work by thinking about and looking at the work of Arshile Gorky, particularly work called Garden In Sochi painted in 1941. I had seen the work in the Tate Gallery exhibition of his in 2010. The cross over elements that seemed a little surreal, but then abstracted appealed to me.

Below is the image that I began working from. It is sort of an imaginary garden space and perhaps I may add more elements into it, inspects or snails for example.

Another design based on the original image above.

These were some sketches I did that includes a kind of self portrait. I wanted to use various materials and then manipulated the images using the computer.
Butterflies in a garden in Devon.

Butterflies
This is a picture drawn entirely on the computer using a Wacom drawing pad. The software is Photoshop. I used various brushes and sizes with a variety of opacity setting to slowly build up the grass colour and texture.
Dark Tree
This was inspired by the work of Alfred Wallis. Usually his work is associated with boats and ships, but he produced some amazing landscape images. I find the sinister feel of the trees appealing and like the fact the fallen cones on this picture are slightly obscured and the perspective is wrong.
Trees
Again inspired by Alfred Wallis.

A Stool in The Garden

A Stool In The Garden

This is an ornament in the garden. This picture was made entirely by using the computer and building up colours by the use of various brushes, brush sizes and opacities.
